How we were formed

On January 19, 1997, a group of T-Bird enthusiasts gathered at Neal Blaisdell Park for the first Thunderbird Club meeting in almost 20 years. About 20 interested participants, companions, and families gathered to share stories, a pot-luck lunch, and to admire the 9 classic T-Birds on display.

An overwhelming response to start a new club was voted on and the wheels were put into motion.  Signup sheets were provided for those interested in joining and a list of those who were willing to be officers was filled in.

Jim Sattler, a local attorney and avid car collector, reminisced about the clubs origins in the 1970’s.  He had memorabilia of the former organization to share with everyone.

It was decided by all to again name the club The Classic Birds of Paradise.  The name and distinctive colorful logo, which was later redesigned, was submitted to the national club, The Classic Thunderbird Club International, and registered with the State of Hawaii.

The organization was off and rolling with a slate of officers, many of whom are still in place, an article of incorporation, a set of by-laws (thanks to Jim Sattler, who recently passed away), and a bunch of enthusiastic guys and gals.

There were plans for workshops, events where our cars could be shown, a chance to share our knowledge with others, and an opportunity to come together as a group.

Our Club Today

We have about 35 members with about 20 cars in various states of operation. We try to get together for cruises and other types of events at least every quarter but lately we haven't been as successful as we would like. An example is that we planned to take the Hawaii SuperFerry to Maui with our cars. Needless to say, that fell through when the Ferry went out of business. Gail Lindstrom, our Newsletter Editor, keeps us up to date with our schedule of events. The photos of our recent Train Ride from Ko Olina on the Sugar Cane Train can be viewed from the top navagation bar. Also, photos of our annual dinner at Gail Lindstrom's house may be viewed.
